Initiative

Origin of the initiative

The Forum for Responsibility Foundation aims to make civil society aware of the scientific background and interrelationships of desirable sustainable development. Since the reorientation of a society towards sustainable development cannot be implemented without broad public support, a discourse on sustainability must begin. In March 2005, the Foundation Forum for Responsibility organized a colloquium on “The future of the earth – what can our planet take?” as part of its colloquium series. This laid the foundation for the educational initiative Courage for Sustainability, which Klaus Wiegandt launched in 2006. The initiative is supported by the Forum for Responsibility Foundation, the ASKO Europa-Stiftung and the Europäische Akademie Otzenhausen.

Concept of the initiative

The concept of the initiative originally consisted of three parts:

1. 13 books on sustainability (The Sustainability Project)

2. development of extensive educational materials from the contents of the book series

3. offering a comprehensive seminar and educational program on the topic of “sustainable development”

In the meantime, numerous other projects and collaborations with well-known partners have developed. Courage for Sustainability operates throughout Germany and in some cases in other European countries. From 2007-2014, the initiative was recognized four times as an official project of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.
