Humans have become the most powerful force shaping the earth: We are heating up the climate, destroying biodiversity and reshaping global material cycles. If the transition to sustainable development is to succeed and we do not want to destroy our natural resources, we need to familiarize ourselves with how the Earth system works. Our production methods and consumption must remain within planetary boundaries and below global tipping points in order to avoid triggering irreversible processes.
