How we can still turn around the fate of the tropical rainforests
For some they are paradises, others still speak of a green hell. Hardly any other habitat triggers so much fascination and at the same time is so threatened: cattle herds, palm oil plantations and the run on tropical timber are attacking the rainforests and their immense biodiversity from all sides. Claude Martin summarizes the current state of knowledge in the new “Report to the Club of Rome”: He looks at the different regional causes of deforestation, assesses the chances of protective measures and ventures a look into the future.
The question of how the rainforests will react to climate change proves to be particularly relevant. Scientists agree that a time bomb is ticking here if the forest collapses and goes up in flames because it is getting drier and drier. For Claude Martin, a grand finale is currently taking place at the equator – without us knowing exactly how it will end.
