From knowledge to action
Didactic modules
The “Sustainable development” module contains a brief and comprehensive introduction to the topic and links the various thematic paths of all didactic modules. The Earth is described as a complex system in which subsystems such as ecosystem(s) and society interact: The use of nature by humans has consequences that are partly reversible and partly irreversible. Their interactions cannot always be assessed in concrete terms. Since industrialization, the use of natural resources has steadily increased worldwide. This is linked to ecological problems that also affect people’s lives.
How do people deal with these problems and the associated uncertainties? How can the abundance of nature’s services be preserved? How can prosperity and quality of life be safeguarded and nature and the climate protected? The limits of nature’s capacity are also the limits of our economy’s capacity. Only what is globally and locally environmentally, socially and individually compatible can be sustainable.
The materials in the module encourage a creative approach to various aspects of the problem of sustainability. The presentation of the interrelationships between different systems on earth is a focal point. The module also contains materials on the European Sustainable Development Strategy and the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.
